Big Day Music Winter Newsletter

Intro

As with a great band arrangement, your gonna need an intro!

1,2,1,2,3,4……. So, welcome to the Big Day Music Winter Newsletter. The idea behind this quarterly newsletter is to share what we are up to, going to be up to and put out there a few amusing anecdotes that have happened on the stage.

The quite time of year

January and February are a notoriously quite period for musicians and their bands following the hectic Christmas season.

Big Day Music bands were playing most nights over the festive season, as well as maintaining our regular gigs at the Savoy, with the Brian White Quartet on Friday nights and the Square, with The Brian White / Tim Horsfall Duo on Thursdays. So now it’s time for a bit of respite and planning for the New Year ahead with some new projects and band arrangements to be done.

Firstly, it is worth a mention that we have launched a brand spanking new website.

As much as www.bwjazz.co.uk was fun, the years have taken its toll. Technology had moved against it, and to be honest it was ready for the big website graveyard in the sky!

Check out the new site at www.bigdaymusic.co.uk

Any feedback would be welcome……

This downtime is also a great opportunity to get some wood shedding done (individual practice time). As well as home practice, keeping the musical ball rolling is our top priority. Therefore, an influx of new material is on the cards too.

If you come to see us at the Savoy on a Friday you may well catch one of these new arrangements.

Dates for your diary

For the month of January, the Savoy Hotel closes its doors to let the staff have a well-deserved holiday. So, while Figaro, Cosmin, Angela and Robert are off sunning themselves, we are all left her in Jersey to enjoy the winter weather.

Our weekly and favourite gig with the Brian White Quartet is the Savoy Friday jazz session, and will begin on Friday 7th February when the Hotel Savoy Jersey re-opens.

Don’t forget that although not required, It is advisable to book a table for the epic Friday night Jazz set. Music starts at 8pm.

Also, the Square has also closed for a refurbishment, due to open again in February. The Brian White / Tim Horsfall will be back on Thursday 6th February, for 2 sets of Jazz and Bossa Nova. Looking forward to seeing the new décor.

Generally, we play there every Thursday except the final calendar Thursday of each month. But check as this sometimes changes.

Optimistic Voices, Cake and Cabaret

Although not directly a Big Day Music band, the Optimistic Voices are very close to our hearts, notwithstanding the fact that I am the trumpet player in the group!

Run by the fantastic Sharon and Hannah Campbell the OV 7’s continue the Island wide parish hall tour in 2020. Details of past Shows Links

Cake and Cabaret is a series of events in collaboration with ArtHouse Jersey, to bring an afternoon of entertainment to senior folk of each Parish. If you are interested in attending your parish Cake and Cabaret afternoon get in touch with the Parish hall or ArtHouse Jersey for details.

Highlight of the quarter

The Brian White Quartet had the pleasure of seeing in the New Year at the Grand Hotel, for their Gatsby themed New Year’s Eve Party. What a night it was too, with the majority of the guests wearing full Gatsby attire.

Brian White Quartet – Gatsby Quartet

We started the night with a gentle background set during the diner. Following a DJ interlude. The brain White Gatsby Quartet then livened the night up with a set of Gatsby Jazz, with tunes from the early 20th century.

Joining us on the evening was local DJ Stefunk (Stefan Rousseau) who brought in the New Year in his own distinct DJ’ing style.  We are looking forward to collaborating more with Stefan in 2020 as he comes on board at Big Day Music, as our “DJ of choice”

We would like to to thank Neil and Alexandra at the Grand Jersey for inviting us, and look forward to working with you in 2020.

Quote of the Quarter

We have a lot of fun on stage,  which usually starts before and carries on way after we finish playing. Here is one of the many memorable quotes from 2019.

  – Unmentionable Bass Player, about an unmentionable drummer –  “That tune slowed down so much that by the end of it, they were on the tune they played before!”
